Portrait of Lucky

The neighbors a few houses down raised turkeys this year.  I could hear turkey gobbles during the day all summer.  When Thanksgiving came, only "Lucky" remained--he was the smallest, so he was pardoned.  The rest were Not Lucky.  They were dinner.

With a dozen chickens (hens) for company, Lucky is not alone.  He's not the boss, though.  Rosie is the boss:

It's okay, Lucky and Rosie.  I'm vegetarian.

  1. Amazing pictures! How did you get the birds so still so the images were not blurry? Funny that Rosie rules the roost.

    1. They are very calm birds, used to having quite a few people around. They were not moving fast.

Rosie is 1 tough old girl!

  2. I'm glad Lucky got a pardon - as turkeys go, he's very handsome.

  4. We have a flock of wild turkeys roaming the streets of Davis. They're not fazed by cars or people. I always enjoy seeing them!

    1. They eat plenty of bugs, which is not such a bad thing for a garden. :)

    1. The wild originals are smart, hardy birds. The modern domesticated version, neither smart nor hardy. This Royal Palm breed is closer to the original, fairly smart, fairly hardy.

I'm happy Lucky was spared also. He's a beautiful proud bird and it is fun to hear his turkey calls.
